Solo Adventure Travel: Hike + Yoga with REI Outdoor School

I've found new hiking partners!

When the Dutch is away on business, my options for exploring the wilderness are drastically reduced. I do have friends who enjoy being outside, but if schedules don't match up, I hate not being able to do what I like doing.

Without learning how to use a compass and do triangulations on a map, I've found the best way to still get out there is go with a group. The presence of an organizer who knows the trail and is trained in back-country first-aid is always reassuring.

It was a beautiful day to go on a Hike and Yoga with REI Outdoor School. We went to Taylor Ranch Preserve in Placer County, California, which is a privately owned wilderness area filled with giant oak trees roaring for it to be spring already. I have done quite a bit of yoga in my life, but who knew ancient oak trees could look so wonderful upside down? Hiking, morning meditation, pranayama, and sun salutations amongst the oak trees and wildflowers, a choir of birds and the occasional woodpecker, eagles hovering overhead, and a quietly gurgling creek - beats thumb-twiddling any day.
