A Reiki Session in Reno

One of the greatest challenges of writing is that every once in a while, you are presented with a subject very difficult to put into words. There are those that are conceptual and abstract, it is impossible to articulate their essence.
At the referral of a very good friend, I went to a Reiki healing session with Sarila Santillano, a healer who is just establishing her practice in the valley. Not knowing anything about reiki, I went in out of curiosity. I consider myself tenacious, but I too have my limits. I will not even attempt to describe the experience because some things are extremely personal and revealing that they are better left unsaid. I fear that any of my unqualified attempts at demystifying reiki will be a disaster. I mean, how would you describe that sensation of sticking your face out the window of a moving car as it is driving through lush hills filled with vividly colored wildflowers?
What I will reveal though that as a general, universal experience, everyday life presents many distractions. Our hyper-connected world translates to no reprieve from the deluge of information that is oftentimes short-lived in its relevance. My own personal consciousness as of late is best described as a flipbook. Being flipped rapidly at breakneck speed. I regret that my mind is constantly buzzing, yes, even in the last moments before I fall asleep, and sadly, sometimes even while.
But they say awareness is half the battle and if one is aware of one’s ability of being aware of the present moment, then maybe liberation is within sight. For what use is everything else in one’s pursue of giddiness – or perhaps better called happiness in this context – if one cannot be truly present in the moment without the interference of our judging minds, to fully be entrenched in the experience of it?
I will not attempt to sell you the idea of reiki. I will not attempt to define it. But this I will tell you: if your mind is tirelessly chattering away, unwieldy and if it has gotten to a point of certain exhaustion, as mine has the preponderance of doing (and unbelievable talent, I must say), Reiki is a way to get a break. It is a chance to proactively admit to yourself that that is not working anymore. It is a way to return to awareness of awareness. To quiet and stillness.
This blog is all about inspiring and empowering others to be the best and happiest version of themselves as I pursue the same exact thing for myself. While I advocate traveling and outdoor adventures as the most latent ways to do that, there are also spiritual and higher levels to sustaining happiness. Sometimes, it is just prayer. Or kindness to oneself. Or gratitude. Or a yoga practice. But when circumstances call for a little bit of a hand, there are many tools and people, who will support you on your battle uphill. And I have a deep seated conviction that if you are ready for it, you will find it. And maybe if you are still reading this, then maybe part of you has already sought it.

What is Reiki?
Reiki is an ancient, Japanese technique used to promote healing and relaxation as well as stress reduction. The human body has an extraordinary power and innate ability to heal itself. Reiki is administered by “laying on hands” which activates the body’s own natural healing mechanisms by opening blockages in the energetic system. This restores balance and wholeness in the body including the mind, emotions, and spirit. While not a religion, people sometimes find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with spirituality and or with the experience of their religion.
History of Reiki
Reiki is made of two Japanese words: Rei meaning “God’s wisdom or higher power” and Ki meaning “life force energy”.
Reiki was rediscovered by a Japanese physician, Dr. Mikao Usui in the late 19th, early 20th century. Dr. Usui taught and passed down the Reiki System of Natural Healing to a number of students, where Mrs. Hawayo Takata (Takata Sensei) eventually brought it to the western world in 1937.
Usui Reiki Treatments
Reiki is a touch therapy practice performed by a practitioner who has been attuned by a Reiki master. The practitioner’s hands are placed above or on the body at key locations. The client may feel a warm glow and overall relaxation after a session. At times the body may experience a little discomfort as the stored toxins are released, but will feel better after a short period of time. In order to get the most of the Reiki healing energies and well-being, a person must actively commit to improving themselves. Healing the body, mind, emotion and spirit is done by consciously deciding to improve oneself, which is a necessary part of the Reiki healing experience. This is a complete system that requires a client to take an active part in and accept responsibility for his or her healing.
