Fear Factor

I think fear is one of the most pervasive and powerful emotions we all share as humans. Many of our life defining moments come to us when confronted with moments ridden with fear and if we are lucky, we choose to acknowledge fear and act despite of it. Fear as an emotion is a topic I find utterly fascinating that I have read a lot about. It is an intangible thing, many philosophize as "made up". Yet fear is far-reaching and it could face us everyday - some to debilitating effects. Fear of being ridiculed. Fear of losing others. Fear of inadequacy. Fear of love. Fear of vulnerability. Fear of failure. Fear of dying.

Like many of you who are suckers for public radio, TED Radio Hour is one of those radio shows that could turn your perspective around in a matter of an hour. Check out TED Radio Hour here and listen to the podcast released on 7/28/16 called "Fear is an Option".

As I was listening to this, I thought: How genius is Silicon Valley to encourage risk and failure?

OTHER PEOPLE WHO RISK FAILURE despite fear

I remember the story of Seth Godin who, back in the day, when working as a publisher, he got rejected 800 times? And now he is a successful book author. His philosophy is that if he has failed more times than you, then he will be more successful.

And what of Massimo Bottura, chef and owner of Osteria Franciscana in Modena, Italy - now hailed the #1 restaurant in the world? His story started out as a story of failure, too.

And speaking of best restaurants in the world, have you seen that episode of Parts Unkown where Anthony Bourdain spent time at Rene Redzepi's kitchen as Redzepi's staff huddled around and presented their own creative plates for no other reason than to experiment and risk exposure?

And what about Brene Brown whose Ted Talk on vulnerability has been viewed 5,000,000+ times?

And finally, Reshma Saujani, whose failed attempt at elected public office in New York led her to found "Girls who Code" and be an advocate for girls to be brave and courageous.
