WIDE OPEN ROAD
THE SIERRAS
To be completely honest, I slept through New
Year's Eve. Christmas is always an exceptionally
special time for me, but New Year's with its parties,
fireworks, and/or countdowns have always been a bit meh.
I will say though that the real relevance of the New Year
for me doesn't lie in the champagne drinking (okay, maybe
a little bit) but in resolutions, mood-setting, vision-shaping -
whatever you want to call it - for the year to come. If I look
back at the things that I chose to do in 2016, I simply
reflect back on what I did the first day of 2016, and it
would be pretty apparent why I put energy
on the things that I did.

Now that 2017 is officially here, we are on the road -
an extremely promising sign. We've decided to spend the
first couple days of the year with family in the Sierras,
enjoying the mountains we are so crazy about.

I've also set my sights on places in the world I
want to see during the new year, but for once in
a very long time, I don't particularly have a do-or-die list.
The Dolomites, Croatia, Norway, and Alaska are in the back
of mind lately, but so is Hokkaido, South America, and
Paris lately, for whatever reason (it must be the strong dollar).
But like the big open road, my 2017 is empty, (calling Tourism
Boards out there) but full of wonderful promise that
whatever is up ahead, I trust that it is going to
be magnificent regardless.

And like the snowstorm that so conveniently hit
the Sierras tonight that will last a good respectable
few days, I'm not sure what will greet us in the morning,
or how much snow would have fallen then or how
the roads will be on our drive home. I just
know about here and now today,
and that is spectacular enough.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!
