CLOSE TO
HOME
DONNER LAKE, CALIFORNIA
It's been a relatively quiet and calm 2017 so far.
I usually insist on taking the most advantage of
long weekends to go out of town, yet here I am
on the first 3-day weekend of the year in my
jammies after having slept in to 8am (which we
hardly ever do really). The weather here in the
Sierras have been quite extreme in the last week.
We were on flood watch last weekend as the snow
pummeled the higher elevations to up to 13 feet
in some ski resorts.
Since, it has been snowy and wet and dreary and gloomy.
I'm not usually one to complain about the weather, but now I
get a glimpse of what it must be like to have cabin fever. It's
almost always sunny in the Sierras but the last week has just
been monochromatic and it seriously just makes you
want to lay under the covers all day and sleep the day off.
Wake me up when the sun is done with its tantrum, would you?

But I digress. We have been staying close to our orbit
lately and most of that has to do with the in-laws visiting
from Europe for three weeks. So we have been showing
off the Sierras to them and in that, cementing our choice
in living in arguably one of the most beautiful parts
of America.

We arrived at Donner Lake under somewhat treacherous
and snowy driving conditions (the clouds would lift later as
we were leaving) but it just made everything muted and quiet.

The color of the water and the sky would change, as did the
visibility, as snow, fog, clouds, and light would fight for
dominance. There were tiny waterfront cabins off on the
opposite side of the lake with layers and layers of white-top
pines on the slopes on top of them.

Snow and alpine lakes, I tell you, is bucket-list material.
The scene sort of reminded me of our time in Lake Louise in Banff
earlier this season, and it was there I thought that
sometimes, staying close to home isn't all that bad.
